Random Thoughts After The First Round

After a weak start to the tourney what a great Friday night finish.

Does anyone remember when Kansas was undefeated and ranked #1?

Why did I put Syracuse through until the Elite Eight in my bracket knowing that they had a difficult Vermont team to get by in the first round?

How does Syracuse get what had to be the last #4 seed after winning the Big East tourney, and then get stuck playing the top #13 seed in Vermont (who really deserved a #12 before ODU or Wisc. Mil.) in Worchester which is an hour from the Vermont state line? Seems like a pretty raw deal for Syracuse.

I guess we should shut up now about UAB.

Once again, I need to explain how the selection process works for you. Now, stop, look and learn. The NCAA Tournament Selection Committee ranks all 65 tournament teams 1-65 on what they call an S-curve. Exttrapolating based on the assumed sequence of Illinois as the top seed in the tournament, they would naturally be the #1 team on the S-curve. Following Illinois is widely believed to be UNC, Duke and Washington, making up teams 2-4 on the S-curve. If you follow the placement of the remaining top 4 seeds in each regional, you would end up with Syracuse as the #14 team in the S-curve, and the 2nd best 4 seed in the tournament, not the last 4 seed (which would be Boston College, as they are the 4 seed in Illinois' regional). If you need more instruction on how to placeteams in a bracket, I will gladly instruct you further.

As for why you chose Syracuse to be in your Elite Eight, I do believe I have already established the point that you are a moron, thus explaining your poor selection.

By the way, you asked why Syracuse played the Catamounts so close to Vermont ?? The NCAA has in place a system which protects the top 3 seeds in each regional. That process does not extend to the protection of 4 seeds (because of their proximity to 5 seeds in the bracket). In other words, Syracuse is not extended the same protections of not having to play another opponent so close to home as the teams seeded higher than themselves. This also explains why Syracuse was not placed in Cleveland and BC placed in Worcester.

And, unlike Syracuse fans, aleast Kansas fans will not have the same opportunity to cry and whine regarding the game location of their monumental choke against Bucknell.

And please, do not shut up about UAB.... I am sure you can still make your case that Notre Dame deserved to be in the NCAA Tournament after their loss at HOME to Holy Cross and UAB's win against LSU, a team seeded 5 spots higher than the Blazers.

Whine on.......

you can only assume where a team is placed on the S-curve because teams often need to be moved around so there are no potential matchups between teams from the same conference before the Elite 8, I also assume that you have gotten every game right so far pokerplayr, thanks for the hate

pokerplayr said...

You stated......"you can only assume where a team is placed on the S-curve because teams often need to be moved around so there are no potential matchups between teams from the same conference before the Elite 8."

If you truly believe that statement, then how can you assume Syracuse was the last #4 seed and Vermont was the top #13 seed ?

It is yet another example of how you state a belief in one thing, then exclaim another completely divergent viewpoint. For example, "We jumped off the Miami-Ohio bandwagon a week before everyone else, and called the MAC a one-bid league (until today when we stuck with Buffalo)" and "We believed in GW", only to be followed by, "we predicted conference tourney wins by Creighton, Utah State, New Mexico, and Xavier."

Does this mean you do or do NOT believe you know where the teams are placed in the S-curve ?? Or is it just another case of whining and crying because one of your predictions did NOT happen the way you thought ?? I guess the reason your Syracuse prediction did NOT come to fruition is not YOUR fault or the fault of the Orangemen team for not playing to their potential. The people to blame for your failure to make yet ANOTHER inaccurate prediction is the NCAA Tournament Committee, who are also to blame for NOT including Notre Dame and Buffalo in this years tournament... and for including first round winner UAB... and for seeding Sweet 16 participant Wisconsin-Milwaukee #12. The AUDACITY of the members of that committee !!!!! How dare they contradict such brilliant genius as that of Chris and Craig.

In addition, the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee does NOT realign 1-4 seeds to accomodate teams seeded lower than 4. They only realign teams seeded 1-4 to avoid conflicts with other conference teams seeded higher than that team or to avoid potential conference matchups before the Regional Final game. Meaning the ONLY reason to realign Syracuse would be to avoid having them in the same regional bracket as Connecticut, as the NCAA Tournament Committee does have a decree that the top 2 seeded teams from the same conference must not be in the same bracket.

Perhaps you should read the NCAA oficial handbook on the Division 1 Men's Basketball Championship at http://www.ncaa.org/library/handbooks/basketball/2005/2005_d1_m_basketball_handbook.pdf

I am sure you will learn something useful.

Perhaps it might even lead to an intelligent statement for once.

Re: Your Complaint about Syracuse being forced to play Vermont in the 1st Round.

Before the 1st round I heard a lot of people whining the reverse..How it was unfair to Vermont, because they believed that Vermont would face an earlier exit from the tournament than they deserved...
I feel that it is silly to complain about bracket match-ups, because no matter where you're seeded or who you're matched up with, to make it to the Sweet 16 and beyond, you are going to have to be playing your best Basketball, and even then, you have to hope that you don't run into a team that is playing better than you...and eventually you are going to have to play the other top teams or the teams that played good enough to upset them...
So as for Syracuse's early exit..They have to face it, they didn't play well enough to win the tournament...and could just have easily lost to someone else.

Matt R said...

I can't believe that pokerplayr is throwing the Selection Committee handbook in your face while he's claiming that "The NCAA has in place a system which protects the top 3 seeds in each regional." The handbook clearly says in Appendix E, Section III, No. 16: "To ensure equitable competitive opportunities, the committee shall not place teams
seeded on the first five lines at a potential “home-crowd disadvantage” in the first
round."
The committee probably thought that Syracuse wouldn't be at a home-court disadvantate since the schools we're both pretty close to Worcester. There is also no mention anywhere of the S-curve needing to be strictly followed; it mentions a many times that teams should try to be placed in their natural region, and the selection chairman sounded depressed Selection Sunday night when talking about how many teams we're going to have to travel. I think Charlie has it right though, every team in the tournament has to win 6 games against the very best teams in the country, and if Syracuse can't get past Vermont then they weren't gonna beat Duke or anyone else.

Matt R said...

Oh I found another brilliant reading comprehension example by the pokerplayr from the handbook. "the NCAA Tournament Committee does have a decree that the top 2 seeded teams from the same conference must not be in the same bracket." Appendix E, Section III, No. 10: "10. Each of the first three teams selected from a conference shall be placed in different
regions."
D'oh! By the way how is your bracket? I've got Illinois, UNC, Duke, and Louisville. My Elite 8 with UTEP, Kansas, and Gonzaga is kind of shot though.

Floormaster Squeeze said...

I will give you a $1000 to get from any point in Vermont to downtown Worcester in an hour!

CGI said...

I probably couldn't do it floormaster squeeze, I forgot how far east Worcester was and that it is due south of New Hampshire not Vermont

pokerplayr said...

LOL... Once again, your readers have a better pulse on how the tournament field is selected and seeded than either Chris or Craig.

Kudos to Matt R. for actually taking the time to find the errors I inserted in my post. I was hoping that either Chris or Craig would take the time to read the NCAA handbook on "Principles and Porcedures for Placing the Teams in the Bracket", but, alas, it took a savvy reader to discover my deception.

Maybe Matt R. should project your bracket next year. He seems to have a better idea of how it is done than either one of you.

Sony Ericsson Takes Over Title said...

The Sony Ericsson Open is currently the largest tournament in the world with Title Sponsorship. When Butch Buchholz established the event in 1985, it marked the first time in 56 years that a new two-week tournament featuring men and women was launched. Located in Delray Beach (Laver’s International Tennis Center) in 1985 and Boca Raton (Boca West) in 1986, the tournament found a permanent home in 1987 on Miami’s Key Biscayne. In 1994, Miami-Dade County christened the Tennis Center at Crandon Park, a 30-acre expanse that is transformed each year from a public tennis facility into a full-fledged festival for the Sony Ericsson Open. The Sony Ericsson Open was awarded “Tournament of the Year” by the ATP for four consecutive years and seven of the last eight years and in 2004 by the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour and is considered one of the most prestigious titles in professional tennis. In 1999, the tournament was purchased by IMG.

The only combined 12-day Tennis Masters Series event on the ATP and Sony Ericsson WTA Tour calendar, the Sony Ericsson Open features the world's top-ranked pros – 96 men and 96 women in singles competition, and 32 men's teams and 32 women's teams in doubles action. The men’s final is best 3-out-of-5 sets with every other match in both men’s and women’s singles and doubles will be best 2-out-of-3.
