Mock Selection Committee Picks Its Field Of 65

The NCAA mock selection committee - made up of 20 members of the media - met this past Thursday and, after 12 hours of deliberation, came up with their Field of 65. The field was created based on games played through Feb. 11, and was based on a set of fictional results and scenarios put forth by the NCAA.

Here's a recap of what the mock committee came up with, courtesy USA Today.

Here's another recap and a bracket of the final field, courtesy Mike DeCourcy of the Sporting News, who was on the mock selection committee.

And, finally, here's a more detailed - and pretty funny - recap from MidMajority.com's Kyle Whelliston, who was also a member of the committee.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's a breakdown of what the committee came up with. The most interesting development was the fact that Siena and Utah State received at-large bids after "losing" in their mock conference tournaments. Some other interesting results were that the ACC received 8 bids, the Pac-10 received 6 bids, the Big XII and SEC got only 4 bids each, Butler got a 3 seed, Miami (FL) was not only in the field but got an 8 seed, Georgetown was in over Cincinnati, and Kentucky was left out.

The 1 seeds in the mock bracket were North Carolina, Connecticut, Oklahoma and Pittsburgh. The six major conferences accounted for 29 of the 34 at-large spots. The other five were filled out by Davidson, Dayton, Siena, Utah State and Utah. (BYU was the conference winner for the Mountain West.)

Leagues with multiple bids:

Big East: 8 bids: UConn, Pittsburgh, Louisville, Georgetown, West Virginia, Syracuse, Marquette, Villanova

ACC: 8 bids: North Carolina, Duke, Clemson, Wake Forest, Florida State, Boston College, Virginia Tech, Miami (FL)

Pac-10: 6 bids: UCLA, Washington, California, Arizona State, Arizona, USC

Big Ten: 5 bids: Michigan State, Illinois, Minnesota, Purdue, Ohio State

Big 12: 4 bids: Oklahoma, Missouri, Kansas, Texas

SEC: 4 bids: Florida, Tennessee, LSU, South Carolina

Atlantic 10: 2 bids: Xavier (conference champ), Dayton

Metro Atlantic: 2 bids: Fairfield (conference champ), Siena

Mountain West: 2 bids: BYU (conference champ), Utah

Southern: 2 bids: Charleston (conference champ), Davidson

WAC: 2 bids: Boise State (conference champ), Utah State

i'm surprised wisconsin is not on there. i know penn state has some work left, but i think they are an exciting team and they would do well in the tournament.

We agree that Wisconsin is worthy of a bid right now, especially after their win over Ohio State this weekend. Keep in mind, though, that when the mock committee did their bracket, that game hadn't happened yet.

Sorry, I did not realize when the committee made the bracket. Penn State had a great win on Saturday and Talor Battle is back on track. Look out for the Nittany Lions!

Penn State is going to be a tough call for us when we do our bracket tomorrow. There is a spot open in the field thanks to USC's two-loss week, and the Nittany Lions are one of a few teams (along with Providence, ND, Maryland, etc.) that could fill it.

Maryland...come on give me a break

penn state would look nice in that final spot. even if they finish 9-9 in the big ten, i think they should get some consideration with a good showing in the conference tourney.

We didn't say Maryland is getting that open spot, we just said they were on the long list of bubble teams that are going to be considered. What makes the Terps intriguing is that even though their next five games are brutal, they have Carolina, Duke, and Wake coming in, which gives them three shots at picking up a marquee win. Not many other bubble teams have that "luxury" the rest of the way.

How about Creighton? They do have the Buster against George Mason and another game against Illinois State, a team in the sixties RPI.

Creighton has put together a pretty nice run here over the last few weeks to get to within a game of Northern Iowa in the MVC standings. The harsh reality for the Bluejays, however, is that the Valley is a one-bid league this season. Had Creighton swept UNI (and if they won out) they would have a decent case for an at-large, but they probably still wouldn't get in. The Mason game won't really help their resume all that much, and a loss would really hurt any at-large chances they might have. Creighton will have to set its sights on winning the MVC tourney if it wants to go dancing, and given the way UNI has stumbled of late, the Bluejays have to like their chances.

I believe I caught Miami as the ACCT Champ, which may have affected their seeding. I guess they simulated the conference tourneys?

Bracketology 101 said...

Yes, they simulated the conference tournaments, which is also why Fairfield (really?!?) is in as the MAAC automatic, why Boise State is in as the WAC automatic, and why Charleston is in as the Southern automatic.

Penn State will help everyone out when they lose atleast 3 of their last 5. Including their last game at Iowa.

They have no big out of conference wins. Barely squeaked out a win at home against Purdue who was without Hummell and Kramer. They shocked Michigan State but they were without Morgan.

Realistically they need to win 4 of their last 5. Which would put them at 11-7 in the Big Ten to draw serious consideration
