Welcome to another year of NCAA basketball, and another year of our banter together concerning all things Florida State! =) Where is the scoring going to come from this year? Will Michael Snaer make a big impact? Is Solomon Alabi going to continue improving at a monster pace? I look forward to our conversations and your expert analysis! Good luck this year B101!!!

Hey Bryan,

Welcome back to you, too. We were wondering when our first FSU question would be...

It looks like it's going to be another year on the bubble for your 'Noles, in large part because of the offensive questions you mentioned. (Doesn't it seem like we have these who-is-going-to-score coversations each year about FSU?) Alabi and Chris Singleton are going to anchor a solid front line, and the 'Noles are going to be a pain in the neck on D as usual, but they are going to need to find someone to replace Toney Douglas' 21 points per game. Some of that burden is going to fall on Alabi, who was "offensively challenged" too often last year, and to Snaer, who Leonard Hamilton has raved about in the preseason. If Snaer can give FSU a legit scoring threat from the perimeter, that might give them the balance they need to make the tourney.

UCLA is very young and could have trouble making it this year. I think Arizona State is going to be better than people think. Everyone is handing the Summit crown to Oakland, but watch out for South Dakota State. They are a very talented veteran team that gets to play the conference turney in their backyard.

Dayton Flyers are off to a great start with wins over Creighton and Georgia Tech. Can George Mason pull the stunner?

the summit league could be very interesting this year. oral roberts is off to a nice start and should challenge oakland, ndsu, and sdsu for the top spot.

Chris & Craig, does northern iowa have a shot at an at large birth? Keep up the great work guys!

love this blog and glad to see you guys back!

and as a syracuse fan just gloating that you might as well give us a 1 seed now :)

It's certainly possible that Northern Iowa could get an at-large, but there are a few obstacles standing in their way right now. Their non-conference schedule is pretty weak, and they already lost to a DePaul team that could finish last in the Big East. They still have big OOC games against Siena (at home), Iowa, and Iowa State and a BracketBuster game down the road. They'll need an impressive showing in those games, no worse than a second place finish in conference, and a good conference RPI for the Valley in general to earn an at-large.

Keep in mind, too, the fact that the committe has not been kind to the Valley (or the mid-majors in general) the last two years in terms of at-large bids. Creighton got snubbed last year with a 40 RPI because they only had two Top 50 wins and lost in the Valley semis. St. Mary's, under much different circumstances, also got left out last year in favor of a "Big 6" team in Arizona.

Josh,

A 1 seed in March might be pushing it, but Syracuse has been the most impressive team in the Big East (and maybe the country) so far. So much for the LeMoyne game being a bad omen...

Depaul looked pretty decent against Tennessee. Jerry Wainwright is a very good coach and i think Depaul will finish higher than the media thinks.
am really looking forward to the Purdue vs. Tennessee game. Both those teams are capable of making the Final 4. Who do you guys like in that game?

Bracketology 101 said...

We'll take the Boilermakers in a close one.

Bracketology 101 said...

Back to Northern Iowa for a second...big win for them at-large-wise over BC today in the fourth place game of the Paradise Jam. It doesn't entirely make up for the DePaul loss, but it certainly helps.

Florida got a nice win over FSU last night. That could be a huge result at the end of the year as both teams could be close to the bubble. FSU needs a good showing in the Old Spice Classic. I could see a Baylor-Michigan final.
2 really intriguing first round matchups in Anaheim. Clemson-Texas A&M should be a great game as is Minnesota-Butler. The Gophers have a weak OOC slate and could use a win over Butler on the resume. Portland has a shot to upset UCLA.

florida state did not look very good against iona. they will have to step it up to compete in the ACC.

Bryan said...

I agree that FSU did not look good vs. Iona (what team would look good with 27 turnovers)?? They were very fortunate to get the win. I thought they looked a bit better against Alabama, especially when they went to a 3 guard look on the floor - much better ball handling with that lineup, as was shown with only 3 turnovers in the 2nd half compared to 12 in the 1st half with the bigger lineup. Should be an interesting game vs. Marquette in the Old Spice Final. ACC is going to be an interesting conference this year. I think the ACC/Big10 challenge may be won by the Big 10 for the first time this year, at least by judging from early team performances this year.

I think the Big Ten will do better in the NCAA tournament in March but these Big Ten/ACC matchups seem to favor the ACC. Boston College vs. Michigan could be a huge game as both teams look like bubble teams.

the way Penn State has struggled this year i was surprised they beat UVA. Maybe the nittany lion victory will push Big 10 over the top this year. Tubby will have the gophers ready to go after than poor showing in Anaheim. I think Minny will hand the Hurricanes their first loss of the season.
